Great African American activists from the past and present

Anyone who knows how much African Americans have been through since the dawn of time will be interested in what this article has to offer. This article will give you a list of some of the most powerful activists of the past. Some of them you will most likely have heard of, but of course some which weren't as celebrated will be briefly covered here as well. This article should enlighten you and make you appreciate the things African Americans went through in order to grant you the freedoms you enjoy today.

To start consider the life of John Teasman, an educator and principal of the New York African Free School in 1799. He was a great example to other educators and students he came across. The African Free School began with only twelve students but grew steadily, even though the salaries for the teachers didn't. Teasman started an evening school for grown-ups and was the first African American teacher to use a method called the Lancasterian method to teach hundreds of students at a time, with the help of older students. It was a genius idea that reduced the cost of education wholly.

Next is a short summary into the life of another important figure in the African American community: Kate Brown was part of the U.S Senate and a civil rights activist. In 1868 (it was a February), she was on a train heading from Alexandria, Virginia to Washington D.C when she entered what was known as a 'white people's car'. As she boarded she was told by the railroad police to move to another car, and that the car was only for ladies; she bravely replied this car was fine for her and proceeded to take her seat. She was then attacked by the officer and another employee for six minutes, getting kicked and punched ruthlessly. She was so badly injured that she ended up in the hospital for weeks and spat blood from her mouth. She was thankfully awarded $1,500 for damages from the district court. Because of this incident, the court held a ruling that white and blacks need to be treated fairly and equal in railroad cars.
